Internet Entrepreneurs
Part II: Anyone (almost) can be an Internet Entrepreneur, or let's just say entrepreneur in general. Part I - the Mobile Worker on my other blog.
I'm constantly amazed at the number and variety of people I meet who are real-life or fledgling Internet entrepreneurs. The Internet has not only flattened hierarchies and social structures, but allows people to have full time jobs and still run another business.
The towtruck driver who rescued me today has a very popular website, theboros.com. It's a local New Hampshire information website which seems to have staggering traffic during Bikeweek. He sells advertising on his site and perhaps has other moneymaking techniques as well. I like the site - I'm local and I've bookmarked it.
What is the possibility that a white OR blue color worker would have had an entrepreneurial venture going ten years ago? Certainly far less than today!
I have no idea how much money he currently makes from theboros.com, but it was clear from our short discussion that he has some innovative techniques for generating income. It's a website, updated daily, instead of a blog, although that doesn't matter - the two are going to merge anyway, and many of the same techniques and approaches apply. For example, selling advertising, SEO, writing great content, etc.
Before anyone dismisses his site with a "he still drives a towtruck, how successful can he be?," that is both not the point, and silly. If I were making six figures online, would I stop my consulting, training, and keynotes? No way! I like what I do. And if I were driving a towtruck and liked it I'd keep doing it too (picking up the exotic dancer last week sounded exciting for instance).
Effective Internet Presence: Now required for success in business and life

I believe the same thing, Ted. If I were making a very comfortable living that I could quit working... I wouldn't. However, I would reduce my hours and balance my life with other important things like spending time with family, volunteer work, and exploring other cultures.
But that won't be happening anytime soon -- well, except the family and volunteer part. I do that... but doing more of it is rarely something to complain about.
