Blogs "essential" to a good career
The Boston Globe has a great article claiming that blogs are essential to a good career. The article is curiously anonymous!
Some good advice on focusing your blog. Your blog needs focus AND goals:
''I used to have liberal politics on my website as well, but my mentor
said, 'Dude, you gotta trim that off.' Which was fine because in the
world of liberal politics I was just another piece of noise."
I could add a lot of other topics to my blog that I'm passionate about: flyfishing, great food and wine, biking, etc. but that would lower the signal to noise ratio for everyone. Here, it's basically business blogging and (very) related topics. At The Ted Rap, the focus is looser, "Business and Technology," and it's suited my goals extremely well.
A number of other great points, like "Blogging creates a network. Yes, blogs are good for networking. I've met a number of great people through blogging I never would have met, and yes, I'm working with some of them. Hmmm, co-author Shel Holtz comes to mind as just one example . . .
" A well-executed blog sets you apart as an expert in your field" - I agree, with almost everything in this article, EXCEPT the 'essential' part. Sorry, it's not essential.
Blogging is a choice, just as men can choose to grow a beard. Some men have such ugly scraggly growth that they may choose not to grow a beard -- with good reason.
Similarly, there are good reasons why someone may choose not to blog!
I'm still on the blog band wagon, but not a blind faith evangelist!
