Blogging Vacations and Breaks

Since I've started blogging about 16 months ago, I just took my first real blogging break/vacation: no posts either here or at The Ted Rap. Even when on vacation or travelling internationally, I've always managed a few posts per week. For example, I posted pretty regularly from Siberia recently.

Many bloggers do take occasional vacations -- from blogging. Some "Announce" they'll not be posting for a while, some just do it, and some go as far as getting guest bloggers to take up the slack. I just disappeared for over a week (actually I was teaching a SANS Institute Security Bootcamp, and a wee bit overloaded with class all day and lab every night).

No question I'm refreshed, and looking forward to blogging with renewed gusto and vigor. Many bloggers make similar comments after breaks. I doubt I've lost readers after only a week gone, and don't see any issues.

Question: Anyone think I should have announced a week off? Should bloggers blog "I'm not blogging for a while" or is that simply foolish?

And how often is too often to take a "blog vacation?"

Opinions?

I find anouncements of blogging vacations to be annoying and even a bit pretentious. Chances are that unless we have a personal relationship I'm not going to worry if someone stops blogging all of a sudden. In fact it may take me a week to even notice that someone hasn't blogged in a while unless they are of the 2-5 times a day type of blogger. My life does not revolve around the blogs I read. Hopefully no one else is building their life around my blog either.

A post JUST to announce a "blogging vacation" is as stupid and annoying as a post apologizing for not blogging much lately! An exception may apply to high volume bloggers - those who post good stuff many times daily like problogger.net. We all would wonder where they went if they suddenly stopped.

Now an on-topic post about upcoming events, and commenting by-the-way, I'll be real busy and not blogging, is absolutely fine.
