How to Start Developing Info Products for Massive Profits

There are two approaches to developing an info product, for example an educational book, CD, video, or audio course, and one is unpleasant.

Approach 1: You could start with research and look for any unserved niche. Perhaps your research leads to "Toenail fungus cures." You could start developing products in this niche.

Well, toenail fungus doesn't turn me on. This sounds like work, unless you love toenail fungus. Work is OK, but I prefer to avoid it when possible.

Approach 2: Ask "What are you passionate about?"

For example, I'm passionate about saltwater flyfishing for striped bass, biking, my kids, wine, and helping companies use the Internet effectively. My gut, and common sense, tells me the latter sounds good, although the others might be worth looking at too.

Now that you've got your broad topic – let's say your topic (not mine!) is petunias, start blogging on it. Write lots of great petunia stuff. Study petunias via books, blogs, the real world, and more. Become the go to guy/gal on petunias. Hey, you're passionate about petunias – this is fun, not work!

Don't even think about your potential info products at first, just produce lots of great content.

Once you have lots of content, then start researching what people might want. A book on Petunias that look like George Washington might be a stupid idea, as might a video on how to improve your inner being by jogging with petunias in your hair. But an ebook on commercially growing and selling Petunias might work, as might a petunia calendar with beautiful pictures and petunia lore.

Hey, I don't know – I'm no petunia guy and I haven't done any research. Research? How do I do this? Well, you won't go wrong watching this ongoing video series at Tubetorial on Information Products.

So, what's the most important part of developing successful info products? See here.

Great post.
I just finished my first info product and it was a whole heap more work than I thought it was going to be.
I'd definitely recommend checking out those tubetorial vids.

Hi Dominic,

Yes, it's A LOT of work!
Since I've written two commercially published books in the last 12 months, I thought, "no problem, it's not like writing 200+ page book."

But, you need to do everything - which may include editing, cover design, layout, etc. and more etc. too.

I've got a great cure for toe nail fungus! I've got my nail license/and my skin care license! LOL Otherwise, great post! I'm also enjoying Tubetorial as well...

Found your post through ProBlogger.

This is good advice and overlaps my recent article "Why Write About Martial Arts?" When you write about your passion, you can be a success even if you never make a cent.
