5 Tips for a Killer Blog from the Beast
5 Great Tips for a killer blog from my friend the Hairy Beast, humorist and my writing coach:
- Produce ORIGINAL CONTENT. Why should anyone click on your link if all they are going to get is something written by somebody else? Links are fine but you need to include your own valuable perspective on them.
- Illustrate. If a picture will add to the reader's understanding and enjoyment of your post, take the time to add that bit of code. The Beast did a piece today about Ted's book and he made sure to include a picture of the book cover.
- Don't garbage up your blog. Overly-elaborate blogs can be a real turnoff. Readers come to read YOU. Do not make them hunt through a pile of crap to find what they want. Look at the really successful blogs: most are pretty simple, right? The true star of your blog is YOU - feature your work prominently.
- Entertain. If your topic bores you, it will bore the reader and he will not return.
- Provide a sense of self. This speaks to voice - would you drone on and on about industrial adhesives at a cocktail party? If so blogging is most likely not for you.
OK Hairy One, I'll bag the post on the juxtaposition of industrial adhesives and blogging I've been working on :(
Effective Internet Presence: Now required for success in business and life

Did I write that? Must have been celebrating "Australia Day" a few days early.
That reminds me - Best drunken Australian comment heard today: "the ****in abo’s next door are having a BBQ - I don’t wanna go join them - they’ll be drinking petrol and frying up caterpillars!"
Congratulations Australia!

Excellent tips! I think I'm guilty in aspects. :-D But hey, I can always improve. Thanks for the help, though!

Hey Hairy one, yes it was during Australia day.
Bob, I'd suggest a Technorati search on industrial adhesives :)

Meikah, we can all improve!

These are truly excellent tips. However, as I can attest, writing original content takes much longer to establish larger readerships. People are much more likely to bandwagon clearing house sites like instapundit.
At any rate, great post!
