What kind of companies podcast?
Podcasts can be used effectively by companies of all kinds.
Certainly high tech companies and smaller companies podcast more often, but traditional old line companies like Whirlpool and even the Pentagon are podcasting (yes, THAT Pentagon).
An analogy with Web Sites is useful:
Originally high tech and companies that considered themselves 'cutting edge' had Web site. Now it's a given that most companies, even the corner gas station, has a Web site.
Now I'm not suggesting that every company with a Web site will start podcasting, but most companies will have some audio presence on the Internet before long and much of that will be podcasts.
Effective Internet Presence: Now required for success in business and life

As the web is connected by more and more bandwidth, I think we'll see a much broader use of media in business.

Ted,
I think you are bang on.
But let me go a step farther.
Podcasts are the best intuitive fit for senior executives of all of the social media. Every senior exec worth his or her salt is comfortable in front of the microphone (camera - but there are other challenges to producing Vlogs). They've talked to media in crunch situations. They've delivered speaches to employees and external audiences. They've participated in analysts calls.
It's an easy leap for senior execs from this experience to delivering messages to employees and customers through a podcast. They deliver the message and leave it to experts to package it with intros, music and other elements that add colour and depth.
So, I'm finding that "glint in the eye" when I talk to senior execs about podcasting. I don't find it when I talk about blogging.
Bottom line: podcasting is a comfortable fit for the C-suite. And that can drive adoption.

Dawud,
Doesn't matter how much bandwidth, memory, or processor power we have, we'll figure out way to use it. And I certainly agree that business will be using a wider variety of media pretty soon,
Joseph,
Fascinating! It makes perfect sense and mirrors what I've seen, although I've never put the pieces together.
The C-level people I hang out with tend to be CTOs, CSOs, and CIOs. Any CEOs are usually high tech people refugees. You no doubt see a broader cross section.
(this deserve on a post of its own for sure!)
