3 Harsh Facts about Blogging
Bloggers tend to be overly optimistic and that sometimes clouds our judgment -- myself included.
Here some facts to get us back to earth.
1) Blogging is a fad!
That doesn't mean there isn't any long term value: there is, but the wild growth of the blogosphere is going to stop soon and there will be a lot of ex-bloggers.
2) You can't blog on whatever you think is "cool" and build a large audience.
You NEED focus. If you are already famous, you might be an exception. If you've got millions of raving fans, yes you can blog on whatever you want and they'll read it. However you'll never build millions of raving fans this way.
3) You'll never quit your day job to blog.
Less than 1% of bloggers will do it fulltime and professionally. And those that do will spent time on blog related activities you might not consider "real blogging," like dealing with advertising, joint ventures, creating info products, and more -- i.e. the business stuff.
Effective Internet Presence: Now required for success in business and life

"I know you are, but what am I?"
Ha! I bet that witty little retort settled your hash Mr. Harsh-My-Buzz.
No, seriously I not sure blogging is a fad. I think it is more like Orville and Wilber's first bird. A work in progress. You know the first little slimer to crawl out of the primordial ooze of independently owned web publications.
I know that all mom and pop organizations are eventually pushed to the brink of existence by the "Walmartian-Mega-Entities."
But, there are some real profitable niche markets that are exposed by the process that bigger folks get can't afford to exploit. I think that niche is where blogging will continue to thrive.
Am I right or am I right? Am I right or am I right? Am I right or am I right? I'm right, right?
:) :) :)

Blogging is a fad is perhaps a bit harsh, but there are some serious "fad" elements at work here! It will still exist in 5 years, although it my be as similar then to our blogs as a modern jet is to Orville and Wilber's first bird.
Profitable niches -- absolutely! But few people will entirely exist off blogging revenues. Maybe blogging revenues and consulting, or blogging revenues and selling info products, etc.
You are right. You are right. You are right:)

Ted! I think blogging may be a fad, but user generated content is sure to stay for a looong while. We humans, just can't shut up eh. ;)
Maybe the media will be different. Maybe there will be "Virtual Reality Blogs"
